Project Description

St. Elijah’s Church and Spiritual Centre were badly damaged when they were targeted during military assaults. The building was burnt, icons were destroyed and the baptismal fonts smashed. Statues of the Virgin, Prophet Elijah and many other cultural items also suffered severe damage. The big entrance gate to the spiritual centre collapsed after an explosion. The offices, the convent enclosure and spiritual centre also suffered damage. The centre was also looted and even the documents from the archives were stolen. During the military action, the complex served as the headquarters for the army in the region, causing the further deterioration of the state of the buildings.

Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch Youssef (Joseph) Absi emphasized that rebuilding and restoration work was being supported by the faithful themselves, and therefore has deeper meaning, symbolizing the hopes of many Syrian Christians, the hopes overcoming despair and death of the war.
