Project Description

Forty Martyrs Greek Orthodox Cathedral

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Forty Martyrs in Homs was located in the Old City of Homs. It held the relics of several early Christian martyrs.

The bombing caused heavy damage to the roof and walls. The cathedral also suffered other destruction, visible both inside and outside the building, such as gunfre holes in the walls and icons whose faces have been mutilated. In the square outside the church, a sculpture of the former Bishop Athanosis had been beheaded and the bronze bust was left lying next to it.

All of this can be repaired; even the bust can be welded back onto the statue. But it is impossible to restore the human lives and weld back the heads of the persons who have been slaughtered in this place.
